Pom pom proliferation

A (long) while back, I mentioned plans to make a pom pom rug - inspired by this image from the Poppytalk blog and found via Pinterest.

A visit to a couple of local secondhand shops netted sufficient wool and a loose weave backing (aka embroidery template) for the grand total of $9.

Then hours of pom pom making (an easy enough accompaniment to a spot of telly watching and/or a craft night with friends)...

Before sewing the multitude of pom poms onto the backing to form the mat.

It's not especially durable, nor comfortable (a bit lumpy underfoot), but is adding a layer of texture to our fairly monocromatic baby's room, and fulfilled the need to give it a go...

Could even be used as a photo prop - or just as an excuse to share a photo of the baby for whom it was created.

A hospital pass

A couple of recent events have conspired to create this post.

One being the arrival of our son just over a week ago.

The other being the very cold weather.

Either way, the studio/room/workspace I've been 'given' in the house shift is registering sub-Antartic temperatures.
So I'm not straying far from the fire (and the bassinet) - which leads me to the computer and tinkering with some floral images.

Evoking spring and the warmth it may bring.

Weekend diy - lining it up

Could you estimate the ratio of your pinterest inspirations that turn into actions?

Mine wouldn't be high.

But this garland is one.

Here's my version.

Cross 7.5cm x 7.5cm.
Cut one and use as a stencil to make as many as you want.
I used 2 sheets of A4 black card.

Cut crosses.
Erase pencil markings.

Feed through sewing machine - doing your best to ensure even spacing.
I used a white lower thread and dark upper thread.

Play around with hanging options - single vertical line...

Or a more traditional garland hanging...

Before finally settling on the same arrangement you originally saw on pinterest.

A waiting game

Official baby status around here is:

So we are rolling with the unexpected time on our hands and have an exciting garden project underway and lots of other fun things to do with the girls and Nana this week - all the while hoping our plans will be foiled by the arrival of a baby...

A few images from the room awaiting said baby:
The drawers seen before in this post and a deliberately blurry glimpse at the pom pom rug (more on that later...)

Baby's room is also our spare room: Cushions by The Penny Drops.
Pillowcases from a market in Chirsthucrch, but I can't remember the name of the vendor - any ideas?

Also seen before

New door hangers made by The Penny Drops

A crocheted lampshade - but it doesn't fit the light fitting in the room, so now unsure what to do with it...

Urban ABC print - from The Penny Drops and also available in floral and botanical fonts.

I live in hope that the next post will have baby news...
